Gaming Music Video (GMV) Guidelines

Epic

Inspire the crowd, make the audience gasp, and keep us on the edge of our seats for an epic showcase of your editing skills

Holiday Themed

You can pick whatever holiday you want, but since this event is in December… we’ll let you take a guess at what holidays we might be focussing on.

Sentimental

Hit everyone in the feels - there shouldn’t be a dry eye in the house!

Comedy

This should be self explanatory - make us laugh!

  1. You may submit up to 1 entry per category per person.
  2. Group projects are allowed but will count towards your number of entries for everyone involved.
  3. Entries may not contain bumpers, title screens, self-promotions, references to other events, or credits
  4. GMVs may not be shorter than 60 seconds and should not exceed 5 minutes
  5. We will accept content from any video games – including arcade cabinets, online chess, or live action cosplay of video games in addition to your own animation and drawing. You may use as many games in your submission as you want!
  6. No studio trademark logos.
  7. No irrelevant subtitles unless they are added in with a creative purpose.
  8. If you are caught submitting a GMV that is not your own, we will be banned from participating in all future DreamHack GMV contests. We may also report you to other events as a precaution.
  9. All GMVs must be appropriate for a PG-13 audience. M rated games can be used, but must contain a Mature Content warning for at least 5 seconds before the video starts that includes the game title and a brief description of the Mature Content. No matter what game is chosen, your GMV may not contain any of the following: excessive profanity, sexually explicit footage/lyrics, sexual violence, extended excessive gore, bigotry and/or any other mature content as determined by the DreamHack selection committee. You will be notified if your video does not meet maturity submission guidelines and provided an opportunity to adjust and re-submit, even if the submission deadline has passed.
  1. Entries must be submitted as a google drive, dropbox, or unlisted youtube link with sharing permissions that allow us to view and download the video
  2. Entries must be in either .mp4 or .mov formats. We strongly recommend that you submit videos as an .mp4.
  3. We recommend H.264 codecs and 59.94 FPS. Any newer generation codecs such as H.265 or 10-bit may result in playback issues.
  4. Files must be under 400 MB in size. Resolution MUST BE 1080p.
  5. The following are technical issues that may result in disqualification:
    1. Interlacing.
    2. Squashed or stretched aspect ratios.
    3. Chunky/blocky video
    4. Color banding (Color gradients caused by video re-compression)
    5. Blurry video
    6. Line aliasing
    7. Audio distortions, clipping, or unintentionally pitch shifted.
  6. If your video is too difficult to work with, we will consider it a technical issue. We will do our best to have your video accepted if it doesn’t follow the above requirements
  1. If we receive multiple entries from one person to one category, we will contact you to pick one video. If we do not hear back, we will watch only your first entered video.
  2. Event staff, expo vendors, and invited guests / creators are eligible and encouraged to submit their own GMVs
  3. Due to issues in the past, submitted works containing copyrighted material may require permission from the copyright owner(s). The participant is required to maintain the responsibility of securing the rights to the works they use.
  4. By submitting to DreamHack, you permit DreamHack the rights to use your media for promotional purposes for future uses. Entries will not be published, streamed, or recorded for any reason.
  5. Entrants must be over the age of 18 to submit. Any entrant who is under 18 years of age is required to present proof of permission from a parent or guardian.
  6. Contestants do not need to attend DreamHack Atlanta 2023 to enter the contest but are recommended to.
  7. Rules are subject to change at the discretion of the DreamHack staff for any reason needed.
All entries must be received by the end of the day on November 17th to be considered.

Entries that are submitted to a certain category may be subject to recategorization. We will reach out to you if we believe this to be the case for your approval. If an entry is recategorized to a category that already received a submission from you, then we will contact you to let you know so a change is possible.

GMV Awards

Each category will have a winner, runner up, and honorable mention. Additionally we will have an overall ‘Best in Show’ winner. The total number of winners may be reduced based on the number of entries received. Internal judges will choose the top videos from each category and play them from the Main Stage on Sunday December 17th, with live audience voting to determine the final winners for each category.
