How did you first get into gaming and streaming?
I’ve been a PC gamer all my life (in fact my 6th birthday cake was a PC cake). I got interested in streaming after I met some creators at PAX East in Boston who have become long-term friends.
Could you describe your streaming style?
I try and create an atmosphere full of fun, farts and interactivity which is high quality, accessible and inclusive. I love putting in silly amounts of effort into my content and making special events like talk shows and game collaborations as well as cooking streams and community tournaments. My main game I play and love and have built a community around is Overwatch and that is the base of content that I often build around.
What obstacles have you faced along the way, and how have you worked to overcome them and grow your channel?
‘Embracing the scuff’ is a lesson I’m continuously learning, which really just means give things a go and improve along the way. I never know how a new segment or idea or technical change is going to go, and stream communities are super supportive so it’s important to just dive right in and don’t wait for things to be perfect.
How do you interact with your viewers and foster a positive and engaging community on your channel?
Having a regular schedule I think is the most important lesson, then communities can have routine around X nights are stream nights where i can chat with my people. Your job as a streamer is also a ‘community curator’. It’s your job to foster the community behaviour you want and discourage the things you don’t want.
What are your aspirations for your gaming streaming channel?
I would love to strengthen my partnerships with game developers and publishers (working on it).
Can you share a standout moment from your streaming journey so far?
In May I did an amazing 12 hour charity stream for Make-a-Wish Australia and raised $4000! I put my body on the line by eating very spicy food, chat-designed pizza (cheese, baked beans, skittles, seaweed, chocolate, redfrogs and hot sauce), as well as bleaching my head blonde!
How do you manage your time between streaming, personal commitments, and possibly work or studies?
I work full time and balancing that with my aspirations for streaming is a constant challenge in which sleep is often the victim – not healthy. Being strategic around priorities and having a schedule is key.
Have you collaborated with other streamers or content creators?
Yes! I thrive on collaborations and am often seen as a leader that puts them together. Turns out if you just ask people they might say yes! I’m always surprised at people who say yes to me as intimidating as they might be to me. Turns out most streamers are very lovely. I would love to work with my stream idols Bajo and JordanRasko one day!
Could you share some details about your streaming setup and the tech you use to ensure a smooth and high-quality stream?
I am constantly on the hunt for the next upgrade for my stream but I must say the two most important things is having quality audio and effective lighting. Also test things before you go live!
How important do you think it is for streamers to give back to their community and beyond?
Big YES! This year I’ve hosted two massive streamer tournaments for Overwatch, was a panellist on a content creation panel at Dreamhack and I am soon to be hosting an Overwatch Panel at PAX Australia. I did an awesome charity stream for Make-a-Wish Australia in May which raised $4,000!
